The goal of the Sears Invitational is simple: to create a win-win-win situation. Artists sell their work, collectors discover exceptional art, and proceeds help support the Sears Art Museum's exhibitions, educational programs, and community outreach.
Because the Invitational is the museum's only annual fundraiser, thoughtful pricing benefits everyone. We encourage artists to price their work in a way that reflects their time, skill, experience, and artistic reputation while remaining attractive to potential buyers.
It can be tempting to increase prices to offset the museum's 40% commission. However, our experience has shown that artwork priced significantly above an artist's normal market value is less likely to sell. Fair, confident, and consistent pricing generally produces the best results.
If you have an established sales history, we recommend maintaining your normal pricing structure. Collectors appreciate consistency, and there is little reason to change a strategy that has proven successful.
If you're newer to exhibiting or still developing your pricing strategy, you're not alone. Each year we see outstanding artwork that is simply priced outside the range collectors expect. If you're uncertain, research comparable artists, consider your previous sales, or contact the museum. We're happy to offer guidance and want to help place your work in the hands of enthusiastic collectors.
